Redefining The Purpose of Economies

We can build economic architectures that empower people and support all planetary life, redistribute wealth, strengthen local communities, ensure circular flow of materials and allow a pluriversality of approaches. Economics are designed by people, so they can be re-designed with a new purpose – human wellbeing on a healthy planet.

The Old Way / The New Way

The sole goal of the economy and business is to generate financial wealth.

The sole goal of the economy is to support all life on earth.

The freedom of the individual (person or corporation) is the primary societal value.

The primary values of society are empowering people towards human and planetary wellbeing.

Government is small and only there to protect individuals and their private property.

Government is capable, trusted and in service to care for the common good of people and planet.

Markets are always free and unrestricted and favor larger companies.

Markets are dynamic and embedded in purpose while strengthening local economies.

Today we have economies that need to grow, whether or not they make us thrive. What we need are economies that make us thrive, whether or not they grow.

The sustainability revolution will be organic. It will arise from the visions, insights, experiments and actions of billions of people. The burden of making it happen is not on the shoulders of any one person or group. No one will get the credit, but everyone can contribute.

Thinking about development has made me realize how similar economies and ecosystems are. That’s to say, principles at work in the two are identical.

I’m here to suggest that we need new models. We need new ideas. It is time for a revolution. A revolution that is going to unseat unbridled white male privilege from the spaces and the places that determine how the economy runs, that determine our choices, consumerism, and how governments and states run.

At the end of this necessary transformation, humanity will look back and ridicule the doctrine of unlimited economic growth as a lack of knowledge, not unlike the times when men believed the sun would revolve around the earth.

Humanity is at crossroads

Life on our beautiful blue planet depends on a sustaining organization of various forms of life. Our feminist stance acknowledges this interdependency as essential equality that needs to manifest in egalitarian societies and life-serving economies. By creating a new economic architecture based on a female reference system women become makers of a future, in which all life can thrive.

Transforming the trajectory of human development is possible – towards safeguarding the conditions for life on our planet, supporting the aliveness of all planetary inhabitants, serving people and societies, advancing life-enhancing technologies and harnessing knowledge that is truly inclusive. For life-serving economies to emerge, we need to define new parameters that underpin the global economic architecture.
